Sales Tax Accountant

This person will not actually be doing the sales tax but the prep work to send off to the sales tax accountants.  The position though can grow into more, so the company is wanting someone who wants to grow their career.

POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:

Under direction of the Manager, Partnership Accounting & Tax, the Staff Accountant- Sales Tax assists with various aspects of sales & property tax including reviewing tax returns, accounting, payment, reconciliation and reporting.  Primary responsibilities will include oversight of the sales tax function for for all locations, reviewing 200+ returns per month.  Reconcile Sales Tax accounts including Canadian Sales Tax and other fees that must be monitored and updated regularly.  The Staff Accountant - Sales Tax must adhere to tight deadlines and requires an exceptional ability for time management and organization.  This position will report directly to the Manager, Partnership Accounting & Tax and will also have frequent contact with other member of the accounting and finance department which requires strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Gather information to send to third party sales tax provider Vertex.  Review returns once completed by Vertex.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with other departments within the company, especially the GERS and merchandising teams and Operations;
  • Prepare accurate and timely reporting and reconciliation of sales tax, GST, HST, PST;
  • Prepare all applicable monthly journal entries to record all aspects of sales tax;
  • Prepare monthly account reconciliations for other related accounts;
  • Develop procedures around newly implemented tax by working with various departments;
  • Help prepare and respond to questions on budget variances in an effective and timely manner;
  • Maintain regular communication with A/P department to ensure timely remittance of manually taxes due;
  • Maintain all relevant agreements, contracts, notices, etc.;
  • Assist with preparation of year-end audit work papers and respond to audit inquiries in a timely manner;
  • Any other responsibilities that may be assigned from time to time.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Required: Experience with sales and property taxes
  • Required:  At least intermediate experience in Excel
  • Required: Desire to identify and implement process improvements;
  • Preferred: BA/BS in Business with an emphasis in Accounting or Tax;
  • Must be computer literate with strong knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications;
  • Vertex experience a plus
  • Experience with correctly record periodic income tax payments in the General Ledger
